History of the St. Peter's
Church Organ
The organ in St. Peter's Episcopal church had its beginnings
in 1971 when the United States Pipe Organ Company of Pennsylvania installed a two manual organ with sets of pipes acquired
from various instruments that had been removed from their original homes. By the late 1990s, the organ's mechanism
became unreliable, so organ builder William Monaghan was engaged by St. Peter's Church to rebuild the instrument and to
make a few modifcations to the pipe work. to enrich the tonal resources, Mr. Monaghan was asked to add some digital
voices by Walker Technical. The 1971 two manual organ console was retained. Since some of the pipework that was
retained in the 1998 rebuild was either too loud or too shrill. Mr. Monaghan was engaged in 2002 to supply brand new
pipework desgined and voiced especially for the accoustical properties and musical needs of St. Peter's. the result
was a vast improvement, but the old console was unsatisfactory. In 2004, it was decided to order a new three manual drawstop
console by Colby. Additional stops were ordered to provide the organ with the tonal resources necessary to accompany
effectively the solo voice, the choir, and most important of all, the Liturgy. The tonal concept of the organ is neo-Victorian,
the ype of instrument that is most effective in accompanying the Liturgy of the Anglican Church and its great choral tradition.
It is based on the tonal concepts of the great 19th century English organ builder Henry "Father" Williswith tonal
enrichments of the famous American builders Ernest M. Skinner and Donald Harrison. The organ as it now stands has three
manuals, a 32 note pedal keyboard, 70 speaking stops, a full complement of couplers, a full complement of players aids,
and 208 memory levels. The musical selections of this CD have been selected to take advantage of the many
softer sounds of the organ, thus the ttile Organ Meditations from St. Peter's by the Sea. You will hear the beautiful
Flute stops, the sumptous sounds of the four different Celeste stops, the Chimes, and the Harp.
